Vitality

Abstract

“There is much interest in nutritional products that can attenuate the effects of aging. We have screened several ingredients for their effects of opposing aging through a high-throughput gene expression platform. On the basis of their gene expression patterns in skeletal muscle, heart muscle and brain tissues (tissues affecting the decline in vitality with age) between young (5 months of age) and old (25 mo) mice, ageLOC Vitality (AV) was formulated containing Cordyceps sinensis Cs-4 (a mycelia fermentation product of C. sinensis), a standardized ginseng extract and a pomegranate extract (>85% polyphenols). In this study, we examined the effect of AV (0.4 or 0.8 g/kg) fed to ICR mice (10 mo of age) for 47 days. As a measure of endurance, the weight-loaded swim time to exhaustion increased by +22% for AV fed 0.8 g/kg (p=0.02 vs. controls). The exercise-induced depletion of gastrocnemius and liver glycogen was attenuated by AV feeding (p<0.05 vs. controls), and the exercise-induced elevation of muscle cell super oxide was also attenuated (p<0.05). In conclusion, ageLOC Vitality feeding extends weight-loaded swim time in old mice and perseveres cellular glycogen levels and antioxidant capacity following exercise, suggesting the benefits of ageLOC Vitality in enhancing endurance exercise abilities and attenuating functional and biochemical changes from muscle aging.”
